A 32-year-old Austin man died late Saturday in North Austin after officers deployed a Taser while trying to detain him, the Austin Police Department announced Monday. The incident began at about 6:31 p.m. when officers responded to a 911 call in the 7600 block of Grover Avenue, police said. The caller reported that a man was trying to force his way into an occupied residence while the homeowner was armed. When officers arrived, they found the man outside the residence exhibiting what police described as erratic behavior and signs of a possible medical emergency. As officers attempted to detain him, the man pulled his hands underneath his body and appeared to push upward against officers trying to restrain him, prompting an officer to deploy a Taser, officials said. The man became unresponsive, and Austin-Travis County EMS medics and Austin firefighters performed lifesaving measures, but he was pronounced dead a short time later. The case is being reviewed through a criminal investigation by the Police Department’s Special Investigations Unit in conjunction with the Travis County District Attorney's office, and an administrative review by Internal Affairs with oversight from the Austin Police Oversight office. Officials said more information, along with body-worn camera footage and other audio and video evidence, will be released at a June 10 news conference.
