Massive Catfish Caught, Proving Angling isn't Just for Old, White Conservatives

The UK has a new record-holder for the largest catfish, thanks to an amateur angler from Rainham, east London. Darren Reitz, 34, a garbageman by day and an angler by passion, landed this "monster" catfish, weighing in at a staggering 143 pounds (64.4kg) from a lake in Maldon, Essex.

"I wasn't expecting to catch that. It was a monster." Darren Reitz, hero of fish everywhere

Reitz's catch surpasses the previous record of 130lb (58.9kg). It took a team effort of four people an hour to bring this giant fish in, with three friends joining Reitz in the water, equipped with nets, to ensure they didn't lose their prized catch.

Reitz shared his humble beginnings as an "amateur" fisherman, seeking only "peace and quiet" by the water, with BBC News and the UK Telegraph. His patience and dedication paid off after 14 long hours on the water without a bite.

The fish, now affectionately named Scar, has been released back into its habitat. Paul Tallowin, co-owner of Chigborough Farm & Fisheries, estimates Scar's age at approximately 45 years old and believes there may be even larger catfish lurking in the depths, a reminder that nature always has more surprises in store.

This story serves as a reminder that angling isn't just a pastime for old, white conservatives. It's a diverse activity that anyone can enjoy, whether for the thrill of the catch or the peaceful connection to nature. Well done, Darren Reitz, for this incredible, record-breaking catch!
