Allegiant Airlines to close crew base at Austin Airport; expansion plans underway
Allegiant Airlines [https://www.allegiantair.com/en] announced it will eliminate its crew base at Austin-Bergstrom International Airport early next year due to the closure of the South Terminal.
It is not ceasing operations in Austin, but will no longer base a crew in the city.
The budget airline, with a strong presence in the Southeast, especially Florida, has provided no specifics on the impact of this change. However, they plan to use other bases to continue serving Austin, implying minimal effects, but potentially more layovers.
Austin-Bergstrom International Airport Breaks Records
- 2023: 22 million+ travelers, the busiest year, with Southwest Airlines leading, serving >8.5 million.
- Allegiant: 7th most popular, 377,091 passengers, ahead of JetBlue and British Airways.
Expansion Plans:
- New concourse with 20 gates expected by 2030.
- Austin City Council voted to address shortcomings, with potential decisions on increasing capacity and a $162 million contract for a new utility plant to cut the carbon footprint.
