Allegiant Airlines Departing Austin Base, But Not Operations

Allegiant Airlines is closing its crew base at Austin-Bergstrom International Airport in early 2024, due to the impending closure of the airport's South Terminal. The airline emphasizes it will not cease operations in Austin, but will operate from other bases — potentially increasing layovers. The airline has yet to detail the impact of these changes.

It plans to use nearly bases to continue to serve Austin — which could mean more layovers.

Record-Breaking Traffic at Austin-Bergstrom

Austin-Bergstrom saw a record 22 million travelers in 2023, a year-over-year increase, solidifying its popularity with young professionals and vacationers. Southwest Airlines dominated with 8.5 million passengers, followed by American Airlines (5.2 million) and Delta Air Lines (2.7 million). Allegiant ranked seventh, with 377,091 passengers, ahead of JetBlue and British Airways.

Expanding to Accommodate Growth

Bergstrom is planning an extensive expansion, including a new concourse with 20 gates, expected by 2030. The Austin City Council has also voted to approve an initial $162 million for a new utility plant, addressing current capacity limitations and environmental concerns.
