Allegiant Airlines to Shut Down Crew Base at Austin-Bergstrom

Allegiant Airlines [https://www.allegiantair.com/en] announced plans to eliminate its crew base at Austin-Bergstrom International Airport [https://www.austin-bergstrom.com/] (ABIA) in 2024, citing the imminent closure of the airport's South Terminal.

The airline is not ceasing operations in Austin, but will no longer base crew in the city.

Allegiant, a budget airline with a strong Southeast presence, has served Austin since 2013. The closure's impact on operations is unclear, but the airline implies minimal disruption, intending to utilize nearby bases – potentially increasing layovers.

ABIA Breaks Records, Expansion Planned

ABIA saw a record-breaking 22 million travelers in 2023, a year-over-year high, with Southwest Airlines [https://www.southwest.com/] dominating at 8.5 million passengers, followed by American [https://www.americanairlines.com/us/en/aa/home.jsp] and Delta [https://www.delta.com/].

Allegiant ranked 7th, serving 377,091 passengers, ahead of JetBlue [https://www.jetblue.com/] and British Airways [https://www.britishairways.com/en-us].

To accommodate increasing passenger traffic, the airport is planning expansions, including a new concourse with 20 gates by 2030. The Austin City Council has also voted to address shortcomings, with potential funding for a $162 million utility plant upgrade to enhance capacity and reduce the carbon footprint.
