American Airlines Cuts More Routes from Austin

Texas-based American Airlines has announced it will cut five more flights from Austin-Bergstrom International Airport, continuing a reduction in service that began in 2023. The eliminated routes include year-round nonstop flights to Las Vegas, New Orleans, and Orlando, and seasonal service to Palm Springs and Reno.

"American will continue to offer customers access to our comprehensive global network of more than 350 destinations with one-stop connections. We’re proactively reaching out to impacted customers and apologize for any inconvenience this may cause." — American Airlines statement

According to the airline, the cuts are being made to increase seat capacity to hubs and will offer one-stop connections to various destinations. This decision comes after American Airlines' Q2 earnings call, where executives discussed structural adjustments to boost profits.

In November 2023, American Airlines eliminated 15 domestic and 6 international routes from Austin-Bergstrom, claiming it would offer more seats and departures. Popular non-stop destinations like Cozumel and Puerto Vallarta, Mexico were among the cuts.

Despite the canceled routes, American Airlines posted its highest quarterly revenue of $14.3 billion in Q2 and reduced its debt by $850 million. The company also saw a net income of $717 million and an operating cash flow of $1.1 billion, but still carries a substantial debt of $40 billion as of March.
