Juvenile Stabbed at Covington Middle School in South Austin
Updated with new information
A juvenile was stabbed Thursday at Covington Middle School in South Austin and taken to the hospital with potentially serious injuries that are not expected to be life-threatening, according to EMS spokesperson Cpt. Christa Stedman.
Students at Covington, located at 3700 Convict Hill Road, also evacuated the school around 9:10 a.m. Thursday when a fire alarm was activated, according to a letter sent to families from Principal Cedric Maddox. Officers from the Austin school district Police Department believe the alarm was triggered by a smoke bomb but are still investigating the situation, Maddox said.
"We are also aware of a student altercation that occurred within moments of the smoke alarm activation," Maddox said. "At this time, it is unclear if the incidents are connected."
The Statesman has asked the district to confirm that this altercation is the stabbing that EMS responded to.
The campus is safe for students, but the art wing will be closed while the investigation continues, officials said.
This is a developing story. Check back later for more updates.
