Legendary Restaurateur LeeAnn Mueller Remembered

The late LeeAnn Mueller was known for her fiery personality and unwavering loyalty. The restaurant she founded, La Barbecue, continues to honor her legacy with its signature peppery brisket, reminiscent of Mueller’s spirited nature. The brisket is praised for its intense bark, blackened by the smoker and packed with flavor.

Pepper is a prominent ingredient in La Barbecue’s coarse-grind all-beef hot gut sausage, a tradition passed down from Mueller’s grandfather, Louie Mueller. This sausage sets the stage for several inventive sandwiches at the East Austin restaurant, now run by Mueller’s widow, Ali Clem. Clem’s warm demeanor complements the restaurant’s rich barbecue sauce, which enhances the tender pork ribs.

Clem, who started in the barbecue business with John Mueller over a dozen years ago, has maintained La Barbecue as one of the most diverse and inclusive workplaces in Austin. Despite LeAnn’s untimely passing in 2023, the restaurant continues to thrive under Clem’s leadership.
