Texas police arrest woman for fatally hitting kayaker

Kayaker Killed in Jet Ski Incident on Grapevine Lake
An 18-year-old kayaker, Ava Renee Moore, was fatally struck by a jet ski operated by Daikerlyn Alejandra Gonzalez on Grapevine Lake in Texas.
Incident Details
- The incident occurred just after 5 p.m. on Sunday.
- Gonzalez fled the scene with a man who committed a vehicular hit-and-run.
- Another woman on the jet ski stayed at the scene to speak with first responders.
- The man Gonzalez fled with struck a vehicle while leaving the area.
Investigation and Arrest
- Texas Game Wardens and the Grapevine Police Department took Gonzalez into custody.
- The Grapevine PD stated in an update that they are thankful for the help of fellow law enforcement officers.
- "We are thankful for the help of fellow law enforcement officers from the Texas Attorney General's Office, the Texas Department of Public Safety, the Dallas Police Department and Homeland Security Investigations," the Grapevine PD said.
- Texas Game Wardens are leading the investigation into the water fatality, while the Grapevine PD is handling the automotive hit-and-run.
Witness Account
- Lisa Scrabeck witnessed the collision and told CBS News Texas that she helped render aid to Moore.
- Scrabeck checked for a pulse before removing Moore's life jacket to begin CPR.
- "She didn't suffer in agony," Scrabeck said. "It's very tragic, and I extend my deepest condolences to the family. I can't imagine being the parents of this young girl. But one thing I can say is that she didn't suffer from the moment I saw her."
- Scrabeck claimed she saw Gonzalez "driving recklessly" throughout the day of the deadly incident.
Victim and Fundraiser
- Moore was a 2024 graduate of Timber Creek High School and "an outstanding student and athlete."
- An online GoFundMe fundraiser was created to support Moore's family.
- "As The Moore Family is grieving the sudden loss of their beautiful daughter/sister, we would like to ask for the [community's] help in easing the burden of funeral costs for this family," the fundraiser states in part.
- The fundraiser had collected around $22,000 of its $20,000 goal as of Tuesday morning.
- Authorities said in a statement that "Our thoughts are with Ava’s family and friends during this difficult time. Texas Game Wardens remain committed to keeping our public waters safe."
