Central Texas Flash Flooding Warning
The National Weather Service has issued a warning for life-threatening flash flooding in Central Texas as heavy rain drenches the region.
Scattered showers and a slight chance of rain will continue into the afternoon and evening, but drier conditions are expected to return by the end of the weekend.
Daytime highs will range from the 80s to low 90s, while overnight lows will fall between the mid-60s and mid-70s.
Flood Advisory in Effect
A flash flood advisory is in effect in portions of Central Texas, including Bastrop, Caldwell, Hays, and Travis, until 9:15 a.m. CT.
A flood advisory is issued when a specific weather event that is forecast to occur may become a nuisance, according to the NWS.
"Additional rainfall amounts of 1 to 2 inches are expected over the area. This additional rain will result in minor flooding," the NWS reported.
Locations that could experience flooding include: Austin, San Marcos, Kyle, Buda, Lockhart, Dripping Springs, Uhland, Mustang Ridge, Niederwald, Onion Creek, Shady Hollow, Driftwood, Cedar Creek, Wyldwood, Manchaca, Mountain City, San Leanna, Hays, Creedmoor and Mendoza.
Warning vs Watch
A flood watch is issued when conditions are favorable for flooding, according to the NWS.
It doesn't guarantee flooding will occur, but it means flooding is possible.
A flash flood warning is issued when a flash flood is imminent or already happening, USA TODAY reported.
If you’re in a flood-prone area during a flash flood warning, move to higher ground immediately.
Flash floods can even occur in areas that aren't receiving rain, the NWS warns.
Remember: "Turn around, don't drown when encountering flooded roads."
According to the NWS, most flood deaths occur in vehicles.
