Incident in North Austin: Austin Police Return Fire on Stolen Vehicle Driver
Austin Police Chief Lisa Davis provided new details about an incident over the weekend in North Austin where officers returned fire on a man following a traffic pursuit.
At 11:16 p.m. Saturday night, officers attempted to pull over a vehicle that was reported stolen. The driver, identified as 18-year-old Devin Guevara, evaded the officers at a high speed.
After one of Guevara’s tires went flat during the pursuit, Davis said his vehicle collided with another uninvolved vehicle at the intersection of Research and North Lamar boulevards.
The impact caused Guevara’s car to spin around and face oncoming traffic. As officers got out of their vehicles, Guevara fired multiple shots at them.
Officers returned fire, hitting Guevara in the clavicle, and told him to step out of the vehicle with his hands up. Guevara complied, and was later transported to a hospital for treatment before being booked into the Travis County Jail.
None of the four officers involved sustained major injuries. The driver of the vehicle Guevara crashed into was treated and released with minor injuries. That person was the only one in the vehicle.
“These officers did an extremely brave job, and I’m proud of them,” Davis said. “I’m just happy to report that we don’t have any officers that are injured from this.”
Guevara has been charged with three counts of aggravated assault against a public servant, evading a motor vehicle and unauthorized use of a motor vehicle.
His attorney could not immediately be reached for comment.
Davis said the shooting was the third in May that involved a police officer, which she described as “unacceptable.”
But she also noted that all three shootings occurred "when guns were being pointed at officers or (suspects) were attempting to pull a gun on an officer."
The investigation is still ongoing as police try to determine whether Guevara stole the car he was driving.
Per APD protocol, the officers involved in the shooting have all been placed on administrative leave.
