Coca-Cola Recalls Topo Chico Mineral Water Due to Possible Contamination

Coca-Cola recalled its Topo Chico mineral water from 40 locations across Texas, Louisiana, Arizona, Nevada, and New Mexico due to a possible contamination. The affected locations include some Costco stores in Texas and Louisiana. Anyone who bought a Topo Chico mineral water from Costco with the lot code #13A2541 can return it to their local Costco for a full refund.
No illnesses have been reported, according to USA TODAY.

Why was Topo Chico recalled?

Coca-Cola recalled the product due to a possible contamination by pseudomonas, a common bacterium found in water sources, including mineral water. An infection from pseudomonas is generally low risk in people with healthy immune systems, but “potentially deadly” for immunocompromised people, according to the Cleveland Clinic.
Pseudomonas aeruginosa infections are relatively common, with over 32,000 estimated infections in the United States in 2017, according to the Centers for Disease Control. The infection can spread through water, soil and touching contaminated surfaces. Common symptoms include:

• Chills
• Fatigue
• Fever
• Joint pain
• Low blood pressure (hypotension)
• Muscle pain
• Earache
• Fluid that comes out of your ear (discharge)
• Hearing loss
• Headache
• Diarrhea
• Nausea and vomiting
• Red eyes
• Sudden vision loss
• Cough
• Difficulty breathing
• Discolored (red, brown or purple) bumps
• Foul-smelling, clear or pink fluid that drains from a wound (draining wound)
• White or yellow pus-filled bumps (abscess)
• Having to pee suddenly or uncontrollably (urge incontinence)
• Leaking pee when you don’t mean to (urinary incontinence)
• Pain around pelvic area
• Pain when you pee (dysuria)
• Peeing more than usual (frequent urination)
