Karaoke bar bites the dust, another one shuts up shop
Another one bites the dust—a victim of SoCo's skyrocketing rent. This time, it's the karaoke bar, Ego's. But don't worry, they might come back. I bet the bar's regulars are singing a sad tune.

Austin's Ego Bar Sings the Blues as SoCo Changes Tune
Another one bites the dust.
Austin, TX - Karaoke bar Ego’s might be forced to shut up shop due to a dispute with their landlord over maintenance issues. In an Instagram post, the bar owners revealed that multiple pipes have collapsed and, despite negotiations, the landlord isn't willing to fix them as the building is slated for demolition.
"Right now, we're taking it day by day...but it's not looking good since they plan on demoing the building at some point, and we're the only business left in that building.”
Sounding like a country song, Ego’s laments that they may have to temporarily close their doors this Sunday, but promised a “last big hurrah” if that's the case.
Don't worry, y'all, it ain't over yet. The bar's owner is determined to bring Ego’s back after the building renovations, though we don't know when that will be.
So long, South Congress?
It seems that good ol' South Congress is changing tune these days with major clothing brands like Reformation, Madewell, and Lululemon moving in and pushing out the homespun joints.
In the last year, we've seen Outdoor Voices and Maya Star ride off into the sunset, and just recently, Good Company, Sunroom, and Mi Casa closed their doors, making way for the shiny new Yellow Rose by Kendra Scott.
So, is South Congress losing its soul? Well, this conservative considers it progress. We don't want any of that hippy-dippy, karaoke-singin', liberal tear-drinkin' in our town. Y'all can take that commute to California.
