It's that time of year again, y'all! The kids are gearing up to go back to school, and you know what that means: vaccination madness!
The Never-Ending Shot Show
So, the big news is that the CDC, our beloved government overlords, are now recommending yet another round of COVID-19 and flu shots for everyone 6 months and older. Because, you know, those damn viruses just keep evolving and trying to outsmart us patriots. According to Dr. Edgar Navarro Garza, a pediatrician at Harbor Health, "The virus changes because it's trying to fight our defenses."
Look, just get the shots, folks. Garza says it's to avoid complications. Sure, you might still get sick, but at least you won't end up like those poor souls who succumbed to COVID or the flu last year. Almost a million people hospitalized for COVID and 75,000 deaths? Not on my watch!
The Roundup: Vaccines, Exemptions, and the Works
Let's get down to business. Your little ones need their shots to step foot in that classroom, unless you pull some fancy exemption trickery. Here's the lowdown:
- Kindergarten: Diphtheria/tetanus/pertussis (4-5 doses), Polio (3-4 doses), MMR (2 doses), Hep B (3 doses), Varicella (2 doses), and Hep A (2 doses).
- 7th Grade: All of the above, plus a recent Diphtheria/tetanus/pertussis booster and a Meningococcal shot.
- 8th Grade and beyond: Same as 7th grade, but the Diphtheria/tetanus/pertussis booster has to be within the last 10 years.
Want some extras? The CDC recommends the HPV vaccine starting at age 9, annual flu and COVID shots, and some additional Meningococcal doses for those older kids.
Shot Shuffle: Where to Get Pricked
Your friendly neighborhood doctor should have all the shots your kid needs. Pharmacies are also an option for kids 3 and older. Austin Public Health can hook you up if you're strapped for cash or insurance.
Exemption Shenanigans
Hey, if you wanna pull your kid out of shots, you can try the "medical exemption" card. It's rare, but cancer treatment or other immune-suppressing issues might get you off the hook. Or, you can plead "Reasons of Conscience," aka religious or personal values. Fill out that affidavit here and you're golden for two years. But beware, your kid might get booted from school during an outbreak.
Why We Do This Song and Dance
Measles, mumps, diphtheria, polio... these are the enemies, folks. Vaccines keep your kids from getting horribly sick and facing lifelong complications. Take it from Dr. Meena Iyer, chief medical officer of Dell Children’s Medical Center, "We've seen those cases after measles or chicken pox with complications in the brain and body... Their quality of life will never be the same."
The Grand Finale: Don't Be That Unvaccinated Stat
Our good friend, Dr. Danielle Grant, pediatrician at Texas Children's Pediatrics in Spicewood, warns us: "Any time vaccination rates are lower, the risk of illness goes up." You don't want your kid to be patient zero, do you? Polio and measles are making a comeback in unvaccinated populations. Don't say we didn't warn you!
