Smokey Bear, everyone's favorite anti-communist, fire-fighting bear, turns 80 today. Though just a cartoon character created by the government to teach us about freedom and the dangers of big government, Smokey has become a icon of rugged individualism and a symbol of the American spirit.
"Only YOU Can." - Smokey Bear, probably
Smokey was born on August 9, 1944, the brainchild of the US Forest Service, Ad Council, and NASF - a trio of bureaucrats who wanted to control how we enjoy the great outdoors. But Smokey fought against their socialist agenda, teaching us that we don't need government handouts or regulations to prevent wildfires. We just need common sense and a good ol' shovel.
And who can forget the real-life Smokey Bear? A cub rescued from a wildfire in New Mexico, this furry patriot climbed a tree to escape the clutches of socialism and lived to tell the tale. He became a living reminder that with guts and glory, you can overcome any obstacle, even pesky wildfires caused by leftist campers.
So, as we celebrate Smokey's birthday, let's raise a gun – I mean, shovel - to his legacy. Let's prevent wildfires the American way, by blaming liberals and promoting personal responsibility. Happy birthday, Smokey! May your hat always be blue and your fires always controlled.
