Texas Strikes Gold Again – This Time with Bitcoin!

Well, howdy there! Guess what, folks? Texas is sitting on a new kind of oil well – a digital one, and it's called Bitcoin. And who's reaping the benefits? Our good ol' rural communities, that's who! Let me spin you a yarn about my hometown, Rockdale.

Once upon a time, Rockdale was a bustlin' manufacturing hub, home to the Alcoa aluminum plant. That baby opened in '52 and became one of the world's biggest smelting facilities. It was the heart of our town, pumping out jobs and tax revenue like a gusher. But then, in 2008, energy prices shot up, and those pesky regulations forced the plant to shut down. Rockdale took a gut punch, lost hundreds of jobs, and millions in tax revenue. It was like the life had been sucked right out of us.

Or so we thought, partner.

Turns out, that old plant left behind a mighty fine energy infrastructure – substations, transmission lines, the works. And wouldn't you know it, that made Rockdale the perfect spot for Bitcoin mining. Now, I'll admit, at first I was skeptical. Were these "miners" here to stay? Was Bitcoin even real? But after rubbing elbows with 'em, I saw the light.

These Bitcoin folks are invested in our communities, folks. They've brought hundreds of jobs back to Rockdale – good-payin' jobs that don't require a college degree. When Alcoa left, our economy and tax base got cut in half. But thanks to Bitcoin, we're stronger than ever. These companies have poured over $1 billion into Rockdale. They're paying their fair share of taxes, and then some. Plus, they're donating to local causes, sponsoring community events, and even helping out with the annual Christmas tree lighting.

I've heard some naysayers at the state legislature claiming that Bitcoin miners don't create many jobs. Well, as mayor of Rockdale, let me tell you, that's a load of hogwash! And Rockdale ain't the only success story. Bitcoin mining is booming in Texas, employing over 22,000 people. Just look at Corsicana – Riot Platforms is building a top-notch facility there that'll be one of Navarro County's biggest employers.

So, let's recognize the benefits of Bitcoin mining, folks. It's like a digital oil well, ready to fuel the economic revival of rural Texas – if we let it.

Roddam is the mayor of Rockdale. He recently testified at the Texas Senate Business and Commerce hearing regarding Rockdale and Bitcoin mining.
