Kroger plans to close 60 stores across the U.S. over the next 18 months, the company announced in a June 20 press release.

The retail giant has not released a full list of closures, Kroger spokesperson Erin Rolfes confirmed to USA TODAY. However, media reports in a handful of states have identified closing stores — including a couple in Texas.

Why are Kroger stores closing?

During a conference call on Friday, June 20, interim CEO Ron Sargent said the locations deemed unprofitable and slated for closure are spread across the country.

The Cincinnati-based company expects a "modest financial benefit" from closing "approximately 60 stores," according to Kroger's first quarter 2025 sales report. Kroger also said it intends to reinvest the savings from the closures into boosting customer experience.

Kroger will offer roles in other stores to all associates currently employed at closing locations, the report says.

The chain also reaffirmed its plan to spend between $3.6 billion and $3.8 billion this year on capital expenditures, such as money for building new stores and expanding and renovating existing ones.

How many Kroger stores are there?

At the beginning of its current fiscal year, Kroger operated 2,731 stores. The scheduled closures account for approximately 2% of all locations.
