Yet another big company is moving to Texas from California. Hair care giant John Paul Mitchell Systems will soon move its corporate headquarters from Santa Clarita to Dallas County, Gov. Greg Abbott announced last week.

JPMS advertises "salon quality hair products," from shampoos and conditioners to hair styling tools for all types of hair. Its brands include Paul Mitchell, Tea Tree and Neuro, and products are distributed to over 30 countries. The company also has three partner schools in the Bay Area.

The company's move to Wilmer — a Dallas suburb with just over 6,000 residents — is expected to create 80 new jobs and bring in over $12 million in capital investment, according to Abbott. In addition to offices, JPMS will operate a global distribution center at the new location.

Co-founder John Paul DeJoria has lived in Austin for 25 years and said he has "the privilege of being deeply involved with the community."

"We're grateful to Governor Abbott and the State of Texas for their warm welcome and support and look forward to contributing to the entrepreneurial spirit and economic growth that make Texas such a special place to do business," DeJoria continued in the press release.

Since 2021, DeJoria has donated a total of over $70,000 to Abbott and has also been making donations to Abbott's campaigns since 2013, according to data from OpenSecrets.

JPMS has been awarded a $640,000 Texas Enterprise Fund (TEF) grant, a program overseen by the governor's office that gives grants to businesses relocating to or expanding in Texas.

The hair care company is the latest in a list of companies moving from California to Texas. Realtor.com, Chevron, Elon Musk's Tesla, SpaceX and X are a handful of businesses that have made the shift in recent years. The Lone Star State has become desirable for companies like these due to its lower taxes and regulations, strong and growing workforce, and low cost of living.

"Texas is the headquarters of headquarters," Abbott said in the JPMS announcement. "With our skilled and growing workforce, leading position in U.S. and global markets, and the strongest pro-growth economic policies in America, we will continue to attract more headquarters and create more jobs across our great state."
