Intel Corp. is laying off 110 employees in Austin as part of a broader plan to reduce its global workforce by up to 20%. The company notified the Texas Workforce Commission that affected workers received 60-day notices or nine weeks of pay and benefits in lieu of notice. The layoffs impact employees at Intel's facility on South MoPac Expressway.

Intel reported a nearly $19 billion loss in 2024, its worst-ever performance. The company ousted CEO Pat Gelsinger in March and appointed Lip-Bu Tan, who has focused on cost-cutting and modernizing manufacturing processes. Additional layoffs include 529 at two Oregon facilities, 107 at its Santa Clara, Calif., headquarters, 172 in Chandler, Ariz., and 200 in Israel.

With 108,900 employees globally, the 20% reduction could affect over 21,780 workers. Intel stated to Bloomberg that the cuts aim to create "a leaner, faster and more efficient company."

"Removing organizational complexity and empowering our engineers will enable us to better serve the needs of our customers and strengthen our execution," the company said. "We are making these decisions based on careful consideration of what’s needed to position our business for the future, and we will treat people with care and respect as we complete this important work."

The layoffs follow last year's cuts of 15,000 employees, including 251 in Austin in October.
