Discover Austin's LGBTQ+ nightlife. These top gay bars and clubs offer drag shows, pulsing dancefloors and a welcoming community for your June celebrations.

June is here, Austin, and with it, an invitation to celebrate queer identities. While our local Pride festivities officially kick off in August, the city’s clubs aren’t waiting. They’re ready with open arms, strong drinks, and beats to move your soul.

Our hearts still ache for Outer Heaven, the East Austin queer club that shuttered in April, but the ATX LGBTQ+ scene is still shimmering with opportunities to celebrate who you are all month long.

We’re diving into the best spots where you can sashay, kiki, and maybe even find a little Pride romance.

Rain on 4th: Where Gaga reigns supreme (and drinks flow freely)

How do you know you’ve stumbled into your ultimate gay club sanctuary? For yours truly, the epiphany arrived with the release of Lady Gaga’s “Abracadabra.” The mission: locate the Austin epicenter where its beats would reign.

The first clue you’re on the right track at Rain on 4th? The long queue snaking down the block, a testament to the good times waiting inside. Once you’ve navigated the throng, prepare for drinks poured with the kind of generosity that inspires a drag queen’s most dramatic reveal.

And then there’s the light-up dance floor, a beacon of pure joy, flanked by energetic dancers setting the mood. Did we hear “Abracadabra”? Honey, they practically spun it into the ground — a glorious three-plus times, no requests needed. The DJs here get it; they know what the Gaga-loving gays crave. And when the indoor revelry reaches peak, the outdoor patio offers a much-needed breath of fresh air. And a chance to plot your next dance floor conquest.

Barbarella: Theme nights and after-parties

How do you keep a queer crowd on its toes? Simple: give the people a theme.

Barbarella has mastered this art form with a weekly roster. We’re talking “Tues-gayz” for your early week dose of queer energy, “Y2K-Thursdays” for a nostalgic rush of bangers, and, my personal pilgrimage: '80s night on Friday, where you’ll find me dancing to the B-52's “Love Shack” like my life depends on it. The party doesn’t stop indoors; head outside for another DJ spinning a different vibe under the Austin stars.

Beyond theme nights, Barbs holds a special place in the afterparty hall of fame. Case in point: the time I willingly waited over an hour in line for the Charli Xcx after-party. The club was a wonderful, sweaty mess of devoted fans screaming Charli lyrics that didn’t even make the Moody Center set. That, my friends, is dedication.

Highland Lounge: Multiple levels of mayhem

Step inside Highland Lounge and prepare to leave reality at the door.

The sound system hits like a bomb, iconic drag shows grace the stage and four distinct spaces beckon for exploration. Choose your adventure: the main floor offers prime drag show viewing under pulsating neon, and the overhead balcony gives a bird’s-eye view of the revelry. Or venture down to the basement where, let’s just say, inhibitions tend to evaporate along with shirts. And when you need a breather from all that, the outdoor patio awaits.

But Highland isn’t just about losing yourself in the music (though you absolutely can). It’s surprisingly conducive to chats, even amidst the dance club energy. Anything goes, and on certain magical nights, you might even encounter members of the furry fandom, who add a touch of thespian, animal realness to the mix.

Bonus points: With a 3:30 a.m. closing time, Highland is one of Austin’s rare late-night spots that keeps the party going after the rest of the city’s bedtime.

Cheer Up Charlies: Leading the charge for sapphic spaces

Now, let’s get real for a second. While Austin’s LGBTQ+ nightlife is vibrant, the need for more dedicated sapphic spaces is undeniable. Thankfully, Cheer Up Charlie’s is stepping up to the plate and leading the charge.

This East Side gem isn’t just throwing parties; they’re cultivating community. From hosting all-female and gender-expansive electronic music festivals to facilitating dating events for those seeking WLW (women loving women) connections, Cheer Ups is actively creating the inclusive spaces we crave. Plus, you never know who you might bump into.

Recent celeb sightings include the effortlessly cool Gabbriette (post-Charli Xcx concert, naturally), and the charming Will Poulter during this year’s South by Southwest whirlwind.

Coconut Club: Rooftop revelry and Fourth St. bar hopping

Coconut Club, or Coco as the cool kids call it, is another multi-faceted playground for grown-ups.

This nightlife complex boasts the dimly lit allure of Neon Grotto, not one, but two separate rooftop dance floors offering different vibes, and a constellation of other rooms, each with its own sonic landscape. Whether you’re craving the hypnotic pulse of house music, the sugary rush of hyperpop, nostalgic throwbacks, or the infectious rhythms of Latin hits, Coco has a corner for you.

Its prime location makes it the perfect launching pad (or final stop) for a night of exploring Austin’s LGBTQ+ nightlife on Fourth St.

Oilcan Harry's: An Austin institution since 1990

No tour of Fourth Street would be complete without the grandaddy of the gay bars in Austin.

Serving up good times since 1990, it's practically a landmark. Step inside and you'll find a welcoming embrace that feels both timeless and current. Oilcan's boasts multiple bar areas, each with its own energy.

What makes Oilcan's special is its ability to cater to almost any mood. Their stage stays lit up with dazzling performances, from seasoned drag queens to fierce newcomers. They even have a dedicated sports bar section for those who like to cheer on their favorite teams with a side of queer camaraderie. Other events include bingo and karaoke.

It's the kind of place where everyone feels like family, whether you're a long-time regular or just stepping in for your first taste of Austin's legendary gay scene.
