Austin's own Oscar-winner Matthew McConaughey is reportedly in talks to embody one of fiction's most brutal and cynical private eyes: Mike Hammer.
This isn't just any new role; it would be a reunion with Nic Pizzolatto, the creative force behind the first season of HBO's hit series, "True Detective," which earned McConaughey widespread acclaim as the philosophical, hard-drinking detective Rust Cohle.
The news, initially reported by Deadline, has set the entertainment world abuzz. Mike Hammer, first introduced in Mickey Spillane's 1947 novel "I, the Jury," is known for his take-no-prisoners approach to justice, often bending the law to suit his needs. His character has been cited as an inspiration for figures as uncompromising as Clint Eastwood's Dirty Harry and Marvel's Punisher.
This project would continue McConaughey's return to the screen after a six-year hiatus, during which he focused on writing his novel "Greenlights." He recently starred in "The Rivals of Amziah King" and will next appear in the Apple TV+ thriller "The Lost Bus" alongside America Ferrera. McConaughey has also been spotted filming in Austin with co-star Woody Harrelson for the upcoming Apple TV+ series, "Brothers."
While an official release date for the Mike Hammer film has yet to be announced, the prospect of the "True Detective" duo diving back into the murky depths of crime and justice is already proving to be a thrilling prospect for fans.
