Round Rock is home to some of the best Indian restaurants in Central Texas — see: Bay Leaf and Rock N' Grill — and the offerings north of Austin just got stronger.

South Indian specialists Sangam Chettinad opened a new restaurant this week at 2800 E. Palm Valley Blvd. The original Sangam Chettinad, which made our recent list of 25 Great Asian Restaurants in Austin, is located at 6001 Parmer Ln.

The dishes at the restaurant, which specializes in the cuisine of the Southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu, have flavors that run deep and long. You can taste the hours that go into toasting and grinding spices that pack the various curries. You’ll likely pick up on the coriander, cumin, mustard seed, fennel and ginger found in so many Indian dishes, but with the traditional Chettinad curries, you’ll also recognize notes of cloves and star anise blending with the fennel.

If you go, make sure to order some of the best dosas in Austin, Sangam mutton chops, Sangam korma, mutton sukka varuval (stir-fried mutton), and red chili-spiked dry “country chicken” (Karaikudi nattu kozhi varuval).
