Viral Uno Social Club pop-up coming to Austin bar in August

Uno, the game notorious for ruining friendships and causing family squabbles, is shuffling its way into Austin. Mattel, the puppet master behind the colorful chaos, recently debunked an online rumor about Uno tables gracing the halls of Las Vegas casinos. The good news for Austinites: while high-stakes Uno isn't hitting the slots, the Uno Social Club is coming to a bar near you.

The pop-up will be at Murray’s Tavern on Aug. 21 from 6 to 10 p.m.

What is Uno Social Club?

Apparently, Las Vegas isn't the only city where you can stack cards and switch hands for a little friendly (or not-so-friendly) competition. "This isn't a Reverse card," the company said in a Facebook post, confirming that the Uno Social Club is indeed rolling out to bars in several U.S. cities, with Austin firmly on the list.

Mattel is transforming everyday hotspots into the "ultimate game night destination." Expect Uno-themed drink menus, tournament-style play for those who take their card games very seriously, and plenty of photo opportunities to document your inevitable triumphs (or dramatic defeats).

The first taste of this social club madness debuted earlier this month at the Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas.

What is Uno?

For those unfamiliar with this classic card game, Uno is surprisingly simple yet maddeningly addictive.

The goal of Uno is to be the first player to get rid of all the cards in your hand by matching the top card on the discard pile by color or number. The real fun (and occasional frustration) comes from special action cards like Skip, Reverse, Draw Two, Wild and the dreaded Wild Draw Four, which can quickly change the game's momentum. And, of course, the golden rule: when you're down to your last card, you must yell "Uno!"

Murray's Tavern deals the final hand

For Austin Uno enthusiasts, mark your calendars: the Uno Social Club's final stop on its inaugural tour will be at Murray's Tavern in East Austin on Aug. 21. Yes, you heard that right. Prepare your best "Uno!" shout and practice your poker face, because things are about to get colorful.

So, while you won't be betting your mortgage on a perfectly timed Skip card in Vegas, you can still get your Uno fix right here in Austin. Just remember, when you're down to one card, don't forget to yell "Uno."
