Austin’s biggest Pride celebration is still a few months away, with the city’s official Pride parade and festival scheduled for Aug. 22. But Central Texas businesses, nonprofits and community groups are already marking National Pride Month in June with free events, discounted tickets, drink specials and fundraisers tied to LGBTQ organizations.

The offerings range from no-cover drag shows and family-friendly park events to donation-based fitness classes and ticketed bar crawls that include drink specials or free entry at participating venues. Some events are traditional discounts. Others are Pride-themed specials or fundraisers where part of the money spent supports local LGBTQ causes.

Why Austin celebrates Pride in August

According to the Austin Gay and Lesbian Pride Foundation, the decision to hold Pride in August is largely driven by participation.

Organizers have said moving the celebration later in the summer allows college students to return to Austin before the city’s largest LGBTQ+ event. While other cities in Texas such as Houston and Dallas celebrate Pride during June, Austin’s organizers have opted for a date that coincides with the return of students for the fall semester.

The foundation has also said that scheduling the festival in August can make it easier to attract performers and entertainment who might be otherwise booked during the busier June Pride season.
