The first weekend of June is packed with free fun for the whole family. Here are our top picks:
Saturday: Breathtaking beauty in the heart of Austin
Last year, history and culture columnist Michael Barnes noted that the new Wishbone Bridge in East Austin near Longhorn Dam would change the way we see our city. He was right. Now, a new trail system branching off the Ann and Roy Butler Hike and Bike Trail and winding around lower Waller Creek downtown is set to open. The grand opening celebration includes face painting, tours, scavenger hunts, live music and art. $5 parking at the Austin Convention Center 5th Street Garage. 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Saturday: The M.A.C.C. is back
The Emma S. Barrientos Mexican American Cultural Center, which has been closed for remodeling since 2023, presents Juntos de Nuevo: The Grand Reopening on Saturday. The free three-stage celebration will feature music, theater and dance performances as well as art, food trucks, kids activities, a vendor market and more. There's no onsite parking, so take advantage of the $5 convention center deal or the free shuttle service from Sanchez Elementary School from 10:30 a.m. to 10 p.m.
