Another One Bites the Dust on SoCo: Ego's Karaoke Bar Sings its Swan Song

Austin, TX - Pack up your singing pipes and say goodbye to those collapsing pipes, because another long-time business is facing the music on South Congress.

Ego's, the beloved karaoke bar that has been causing deafness since 1979, took to Instagram to announce its potential demise, citing maintenance issues and a landlord who presumably enjoys crushing local staples as much as he enjoys counting his piles of filthy lucre.

"Right now, we're taking it day by day while we wait to see if the landlord is willing to fix all the pipes that keep collapsing," said the bar, probably while sobbing into a tequila shot. "But it's not looking good since they plan on demoing the building at some point, and we're the only business left in that building dumb enough not to sell out and leave."

So, like a heartbroken singer belting out a power ballad, Ego's is preparing for its final curtain call on Sunday, August 11th. But not without a "last big hurrah," because if you're going down, you might as well go down drunk and with a mic in your hand.

While the bar promises a comeback after the building's renovations, we all know that's about as likely as me finding a date for prom. Let's face it, SoCo is becoming the twilight zone where Austin's unique charm goes to die, replaced by shiny storefronts and brands that all blend into one soul-sucking, corporate-overlord mess.

First, we had Reformation, Madewell, and Lululemon, coming in like a basic b**** girl squad, taking over the street. Then, Kendra Scott stabbed us in the back by joining their bland brigade, proving that 'local' doesn't always mean 'loyal.' And now, with Outdoor Voices and Maya Star also showing themselves out, it's clear that SoCo is undergoing a lobotomy of its unique, weird Austin vibe.

So, pour one out for Ego's, and get ready to sing your sorrows away at their farewell party. Because in Austin, the live music capital, it seems the only notes left to hit are those of mourning for a city that's slowly selling its soul.
