Breaking: Austin School District Demands More Cash to Fund Money Pit

Buckle up, Austin taxpayers! On Nov. 5, you'll get the honor of deciding whether to raise your property tax rate by a whopping 9.1 cents. Because, you know, schools across the state aren't bleeding money fast enough.

District honchos swear that if you generous souls approve the tax hike, they'll splash out on a $17.3 million compensation package for staff and $3 million for instructional coaches. Oh, and they might also chip away at their hilariously massive $119 million deficit. What a bargain!

The new tax rate? A cool 95.05 cents per $100 of property valuation. That's right, folks, just 9.1 cents more than the 2023-24 rate. And if you don't play ball, you'll stay at 85.95 cents. Lucky you!

Now, let's talk about what this means for Joe Homeowner. That's an extra $420 a year, gone. Poof! Just like that.

But wait, there's more! If this passes, the deficit will only be... $78 million. Progress, right? And get this, last year they ended with a $52 million deficit. Slow clap for Austin schools.

Now, some board members are having a tantrum about the state's recapture program, which would snatch about 75 cents of every dollar they steal—ahem—collect. Local schools keep a measly 25%. But who cares about details, right?

Oh, and that $17.3 million compensation package? It's mostly for those lucky experienced teachers and almost everyone else. Even two-thirds of the school cops get a raise. Bully for them.

But here's the kicker: whether you say yes or no, they're still gonna hack $78 million from the budget in the next two years. Superintendent Matias Segura says it's gonna be tough. Boo-hoo.

So, mark your calendars! Early voting starts Oct. 21, and Election Day is Nov. 5. Yippee!
