For its 25th anniversary of the conservation plate program, the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department is looking to make changes to its horned lizard license plate, and it is asking Texans to help.

Currently, Texans can vote on three potential designs to update the horned lizard plate, which was the first conservation-themed plate offered to residents.

Proceeds from the TPWD go towards funding projects that help improve the habitat of the Texas horned lizard.

"The Texas horned lizard is an iconic Texas critter," said Richard Heilbrun to WFAA, TPWD wildlife conservation program director. "Just tough enough and just the right amount of endearing to represent our people, our wildlife and our wild places. Unfortunately, we don’t have as many horned lizards as we used to, but TPWD is trying to fix that through conservation projects, which are partially funded by the sale of this plate."

Here is how you can vote on the new license plate design.

Is the Texas horned lizard endangered?

According to TPWD, the Texas horned lizard, also known as "The Horny Toad," is considered a threatened species in Texas. These lizards can be found in arid and semiarid habitats in open areas with sparse plant cover. Because horned lizards dig for hibernation, nesting and insulation purposes, they commonly are found in loose sand or loamy soils.
