Following catastrophic flooding in Kerr County, officials are searching for missing children from Camp Mystic, a private Christian girls summer camp. At least 13 people have died, and around 20 children remain unaccounted for due to fast-moving floodwaters, Kerr County officials said Friday.
Dozens of people took to Facebook seeking information about missing loved ones from Camp Mystic. The Ingram Fire Department described the camp as experiencing "catastrophic level floods" in a Facebook post. Officials stated that parents of unaccounted children had been directly contacted by camp leaders.

Where is Camp Mystic?
Camp Mystic Guadalupe River is located in Hunt, an unincorporated community in Kerr County, northwest of Houston and less than two hours from San Antonio. The camp sits on the banks of the Guadalupe River, roughly 18 miles northwest of Kerrville.

Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick announced in a Friday news conference that "20-some" girls from Camp Mystic remained unaccounted for. Approximately 750 girls were at the camp when the flood struck.

Why was Camp Mystic hit so hard?
Camp Mystic's proximity to the Guadalupe River made it vulnerable to flooding. The National Weather Service recorded the river's gauge at a 22-foot rise in about two hours. The Associated Press reported the gauge failed after recording a level of 29.5 feet (9 meters).

Agnes and Pop Stacy purchased the camp in 1939 after Agnes, who sent her daughter Anne there, became a director in 1934. The Eastland family represents the fourth generation of operators, with their sons and daughters-in-law serving as camp directors.
