At least 27 campers and counselors from Camp Mystic have been confirmed dead following devastating floods along the Guadalupe River in Kerr County during the July Fourth holiday. The tragedy struck as heavy rainfall caused the river to swell rapidly, sweeping away portions of the campground. Emergency responders continue search and recovery efforts in the area, which has seen historic flooding in recent days. Authorities warn that the death toll may rise as they access more remote areas of the flood zone. "This is a heartbreaking tragedy for these families and our entire community," said Kerr County Sheriff Larry Leitha. "We're doing everything possible to locate missing individuals while ensuring the safety of our first responders." The Guadalupe River, a popular recreational spot, reached record levels during the holiday weekend storms that impacted much of Central Texas. Camp Mystic, a long-standing summer camp established in 1926, was hosting its annual Independence Day celebration when the floodwaters hit. Parents of campers are being directed to a reunification center at Kerrville Convention Center for updates and support services. The American Red Cross has set up emergency shelters for displaced residents at Kerrville First Baptist Church (1200 Guadalupe St) and Ingram First Baptist Church (1001 Loop 534).
