Gov. Greg Abbott signed three pieces of legislation aimed at improving safety measures for Texas summer campers following this summer’s tragedy in the Hill Country. The new laws come in response to deadly floods that impacted campers, prompting calls for stricter regulations and better preparedness.

One of the laws mandates that all summer camps must have emergency action plans in place, including evacuation routes and communication protocols. Another requires camps to conduct regular safety drills, while the third establishes stricter oversight for camps operating near flood-prone areas.

"These laws are about protecting our children and ensuring that summer camps are safe environments," Abbott said during the signing ceremony. "We cannot undo the tragedy that occurred, but we can take steps to prevent future loss of life."

The legislation was introduced after heavy rainfall led to flash floods at a Hill Country camp, resulting in multiple fatalities. Advocates have praised the new measures as a critical step toward preventing similar incidents.
