The U.S. Supreme Court is currently in summer recess, but September has been no less busy for Justice Amy Coney Barrett. Her new book, “Listening to the Law: Reflections on the Court and Constitution,” was released Sept. 9 — now, she’s hitting the road to promote it.
Next stop? Austin.
Barrett will join Mark K. Updegrove, President and CEO of the LBJ Foundation, to talk about her book at the LBJ Presidential Library on Sept. 18. The event is co-hosted by the LBJ Presidential Library, the LBJ School of Public Affairs, and The University of Texas at Austin School of Law.
According to the event website, Barrett’s book “brings to life the making of the Constitution and explains her approach to interpreting its text.”
“Justice Barrett illuminates her role and daily life as a justice, touching on everything from her deliberation process to dealing with media scrutiny,” the book’s synopsis reads. “Whether sharing stories of clerking for Justice Scalia or walking readers through prominent cases, she invites her audience to wrestle with originalism and to embrace the rich heritage of our Constitution.”
Barrett’s book tour kicked off Sept. 4 at New York City’s Lincoln Center, where she sat in conversation with Bari Weiss of The Free Press. Since then, she’s visited the Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation & Institute, the Richard Nixon Presidential Library and her alma mater, the University of Notre Dame, to name a few.
When and where is the event?
Barrett’s visit will take place from 6:30-7:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 18. The event will be held in the Lady Bird Johnson Auditorium at the LBJ Presidential Library complex, located at 2313 Red River St.
Who can attend?
The event is open to the public but requires registration. The registration period has now closed, according to the event website.
Registered attendees will receive an email with instructions for parking.
Book sales
The LBJ Presidential Library’s store will be selling signed copies of “Listening to the Law” from 5:30-6:30 p.m. and again immediately after the event. If you buy a copy online, it will be signed and available for store pickup. All proceeds from book sales will benefit the LBJ Presidential Library and its initiatives.
Justices Sotomayor, Jackson also on book tour
Justices Sonia Sotomayor and Ketanji Brown Jackson are promoting their own projects this month. Sotomayor is celebrating the release of a children’s book she wrote, titled “Just Shine!: How to Be a Better You.” It was published the same day as Barrett’s book. Sotomayor has made stops across the country, but will not visit Austin. Likewise, Jackson has made an appearance at a couple events this month to talk about her memoir, “Lovely One,” which was published a year ago.
