Travis County homeowners will see a 9.12% property tax hike next year after commissioners approved the rate Tuesday without seeking voter approval.
The increase will raise property owners’ bills by an average of $200, generating about $42.2 million in revenue. County officials plan to use much of the money to replenish reserves depleted by July’s deadly floods, while also funding long-delayed infrastructure repairs and bolstering future disaster preparedness.
Under a 2019 state law, the county can only pass a 3.5% adjustment to the property tax rate without voter approval, but the law allows up to 8% to be added for one year if the county received a disaster declaration from the governor that year.
Travis County residents expressed their feelings about the tax increase on various social media platforms.
