Veterans Day is upon us, a day to honor those who have served and those still serving our country. Here's which institutions and services will remain open and which will close in observance of the holiday.

When is Veterans Day 2025?

Veterans Day is always on Nov. 11, which this year falls on a Tuesday.

Is Veterans Day a federal holiday?

Yes, Veterans Day is a federal holiday and also a bank holiday.

Yes, most banks will be closed on Tuesday, including major banks like Bank of America, Chase, Wells Fargo and Citi. ATMs and online banking services will remain in operation.

Is school closed on Veterans Day?

Yes, most public and private schools will be closed Tuesday for the federal holiday. The Austin Independent School District is still having classes.

Most colleges and universities also will not have classes, though this varies by institution. Some may host special events to observe Veterans Day.

Are post offices closed on Veterans Day? Will mail be delivered?

Yes, all USPS post offices are closed on the federal holiday. Regular mail will not be delivered on Tuesday. Self-service kiosks may be available at some locations.

Does UPS, FedEx run on Veterans Day?

UPS and FedEx pickup and delivery services will generally be available on Veterans Day, well as store locations.

UPS SurePost and UPS Mail Innovations are expected to need one additional business day in transit because of the USPS holiday.

Is the stock market open on Veterans Day?

Veterans Day is not considered a stock market holiday, according to Yahoo!Finance, so the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) and NASDAQ will operate on regular hours. The bond market, however, will be closed.

Is Costco open on Veterans Day? What about Walmart, other stores?

Most Costco and Walmart locations will stay open on Veterans Day, as well as the following stores:

  • Kroger
  • Aldi
  • Whole Foods
  • Trader Joe's
  • Target
  • Sam's Club

What's open, closed in Austin on Veterans Day?

Austin's administrative offices and other municipal facilities will be closed Tuesday in observance of Veterans Day, according to a news release from the City.

The following services will operate as usual or at reduced capacity:

  • City of Austin utilities payments: Payments can be made online at https://coautilities.com/ or by calling 1-833-375-4949. In-person payments will also be accepted at most H-E-B, CVS, Randalls and Walmart locations.
  • Austin Resource Recovery curbside collections: Curbside collections will follow regular schedules, which are available on the Austin Recycles app or at austintexas.gov/myschedule. The Recycle and Reuse Drop-off Center will be closed, but Austin Water's Hornsby Bend Biosolids Management Plant will have regular hours for yard trimmings and large brush drop-off.
  • Austin Parks and Recreation: City parks, golf courses, cemeteries and year-round pools will stay open, while offices, recreation centers and senior centers will be closed. Hours vary by location, so visit the Parks and Recreation and Park Closures for the latest details.

The City of Austin has identified the following public resources as available to residents on Veterans Day:

  • Report power outages at outagemap.austinenergy.com or by calling 512-322-9100.
  • Report water or wastewater emergencies by calling 512-972-1000.
  • Access library resources at the Austin Public Library's website.
