In a city where dogs have Instagram accounts and cats run entire households, Austin’s pet name scene in 2025 is exactly what you would expect: equal parts classic, chaotic and very on brand. Rover’s annual breakdown shows that Austinites still love their go-to names, but this year’s biggest climbers suggest the city is leaning harder than ever into personality, humor and snack-themed identity.
Luna may still run the show, but Austin’s naming trends reveal a shift with more whimsy and more food references. Interestingly, the top five names for dogs and cats are exactly the same, but some are trending more popular than others.
Top dog and cat names in Austin for 2025
- Luna
- Bella
- Charlie
- Lucy
- Milo
What pet names are getting more popular in Austin?
Dogs:
- Rambo trended up by 937 percent.
- Olivia trended up by 197 percent.
- Jake trended up by 180 percent.
Cats:
- Clover trended up by 444 percent.
- Rosie trended up by 131 percent.
- Smokey trended up by 94 percent.
Austin pet parents are also choosing more food names in 2025. Rover reports rising use of Muffin, Nacho, Pickles, Sugar, Kiwi, Tuna and Biscuit. It feels entirely normal in this city that a dog named Nacho is probably stealing someone’s tacos on South Congress right now.
What names are getting less popular?
While it placed third on the list for both cats and dogs, Charlie dropped in popularity for both animals this year. It still ranks high in Austin, but it slipped while names like Jake, Clover and Rosie pushed upward.
