A grand jury has formally indicted the man accused of fatally shooting "King of the Hill" actor Jonathan Joss outside of his San Antonio home this summer, according to court records.
Joss, who voiced John Redcorn in the beloved Texas TV show, was shot and killed at his home on June 1, according to police. Police arrested 57-year-old Sigfredo Ceja Alvarez, who later posted bail and was granted partial house arrest, according to court records. A grand jury indicted Alvarez on Monday. He's charged with first-degree murder, and his next court date has not yet been set.
According to MySA, Joss had a long-running feud with Alvarez. Witnesses said Joss was visiting his home — which burned down in January after an alleged grilling accident — to retrieve the mail and when he saw the remains of his dogs who perished in the fire, he "started freaking out." Neighbors said they were used to Joss' outbursts as he was known to be "loud," and a neighbor said they thought the fatal shooting was because Alvarez was "fed up" with Joss' behavior.
But Joss' husband, Tristan Kern de Gonzales, told a slightly different story. He posted on Facebook after the shooting that their home "was burned down after over two years of threats from people in the area who repeatedly told us they would set it on fire," and that he and Joss had been "harassed regularly by individuals who made it clear they did not accept our relationship." Kern de Gonzales called the alleged harassment "openly homophobic."
Of the shooting, Kern de Gonzales wrote, "When we returned to the site to check our mail we discovered the skull of one of our dogs and its harness placed in clear view. This caused both of us severe emotional distress. We began yelling and crying in response to the pain of what we saw."
That's when a man, later identified as Alvarez, approached them "yelling violent homophobic slurs" before pointing a gun at them and firing, Kern de Gonzales wrote.
"Jonathan and I had no weapons. We were not threatening anyone. We were grieving. We were standing side by side. When the man fired Jonathan pushed me out of the way. He saved my life," Kern de Gonzales wrote.
Alvarez later admitted to shooting Joss, police said, claiming it was in self-defense following an argument.
While Joss was most well-known for his "King of the Hill" role, he also earned recognition for his recurring role as Chief Ken Hotate in "Parks and Recreation," and made appearances in a number of films and TV shows, including "8 Seconds," "Walker, Texas Ranger," "Friday Night Lights" and "Tulsa King," in which he played the character Bad Face.
