The Get Home Safe Ticket Waiver Program encourages Austinites to make the safe decision after a fun night out.
With the holiday season comes celebration — sometimes, to an intoxicating extent.
According to roadside assistance and travel service AAA, approximately 9.4 million Texans will drive 50 miles or more from home during the year-end holiday period. Drunk driving rates skyrocket around this time, and December is recognized as National Impaired Driving Prevention Month as a reminder to stay safe and responsible on the road.
The City of Austin is incentivizing people to make good choices with its unlimited Get Home Safe Ticket Waiver Program. If you leave your car parked in a Park ATX spot overnight and receive a ticket, the city will waive your fee if you show proof that you received a safe ride home.
The program is offered year-round, but city officials said a reminder of its existence is especially timely around the holidays, when drunk driving rates are highest.
The city’s Get Home Safe Ticket Waiver Program allows you to leave your vehicle in a city Park ATX spot overnight, waiving any tickets you receive as long as you provide proof that you caught a safe ride home.
- Don’t drink and drive: If you’ve been drinking, don’t take the risk. Leave your car in a paid city parking spot downtown.
- Get home safely: Use a rideshare, bus or taxi service to return home safely and keep your receipt.
- Upload documents immediately: If you return for your car the next day and find a ticket, visit the city’s website by the next business day and upload photos of related documents, including the parking ticket you were issued and a receipt from your ride home.
Downtown parking tickets now cost between $50 and $75, but this stress-free solution can help you make the safe decision with confidence.
There is no limit to the number of waivers you can use.
