The Travis County Youth Show kicked off Thursday and continues through Saturday, with about 650 Travis County FFA and 4-H participants, ages 8 to 18, showing rabbits, chickens, pigs, sheep, goats, and cattle for more than $500,000 in scholarship money.
Avery Wood, 14, of Spicewood, waited with her goat, Rose, after checking in at the Travis County Expo Center. The event began with rabbit and poultry shows later in the day.
Audrey the pig waited in her pen, while Brooke Deelman, 16, helped Haley Goebel, 18, groom her sheep, Stanley. Rabbits were seen in their cages, and Jude Garza, a teacher at Ortega Elementary School, struggled with a stubborn goat during check-in.
The Lake Travis FFA sign was displayed prominently, and Lucas Phelan, 15, cuddled with his goat, Bindi. A girl lined up to show her rabbit, and Sophia Sanchez cuddled with hers before the competition. A flyer for a dance at the event was also visible.
Addison Tennant, 15, of Pflugerville, gave water to her lamb, Muffin, while Naomi Fenton, 15, of Austin, carried her rabbit, Joe, to the show.
The Travis County Youth Show, which began in 1938, aims to develop youth character through competitive livestock and youth fair projects.
