Nationwide GameStop cuts include 3 Austin-area closures


Texas-based video game chain GameStop is expected to close nearly 500 stores, including three in Austin.

GameStop revealed the planned closures in a recent Securities and Exchange Commission filing, saying it expects to close “a significant number of additional stores” in fiscal 2025, which runs through Jan. 31. The company shuttered 590 stores last fiscal year.

A significant reason for the closure of physical stores is that physical media is losing its significance to digital media. Video games can be purchased and downloaded instantly, making trips to physical stores largely unnecessary.

“As a part of our profitability initiative, we are reducing our global store base, which includes closing stores that are not meeting performance standards or stores at the end of their lease terms with the intent of transferring sales to other nearby locations,” the company shared in its annual report.

“If we are unsuccessful in marketing to customers of the stores that we plan to close or in transferring sales to nearby stores, our results of operations could be negatively impacted.”

While GameStop has not issued an official list of closures, the GameStop website lists hundreds of locations as closed.
