US 290 Flyover Repairs After Viral Austin Bridge Gap

A visible gap in a bridge joint on the Interstate 35 to U.S. 290 East flyover in Austin sparked concern after social media posts circulated earlier this month. The Texas Department of Transportation says the flyover is structurally sound and that the joint is designed to expand and contract, which can cause gaps to appear.
TxDOT has scheduled overnight closures beginning Feb. 26 to repair bridge joints at the interchange. Crews were seen working near the flyover ahead of the planned repairs, using lifts to access the structure.
Annie Bedford-Cokley said she posted about the gap on Feb. 14, and the post has since gone viral.
