A skunk in Buda has tested positive for rabies, according to police.
An animal control officer with the Buda Police Department responded Friday to a call about a sick or injured skunk in the 600 block of Commercial Drive. The officer transported the skunk to the San Marcos Regional Animal Shelter, where it was submitted to the Department of State Health Services for testing.
The positive test result came back Wednesday morning, prompting police to alert local businesses and post physical notices in the area where the skunk was found. No human contact with the animal has been reported, and police said the case was likely an isolated incident.
It’s the first case of rabies within Buda’s city limits in “recent history,” police said.
Never approach or attempt to capture an animal that you suspect is infected with rabies. Stay a safe distance away and call local authorities to collect the animal.
Additionally, keep all pets up-to-date with rabies vaccinations and avoid contact with wild or stray animals. If you're bitten or scratched, wash the wound immediately and seek medical care right away.
