Texans will likely see a rise in gas prices as the conflict involving Iran continues to rattle global energy markets.
A look at national gas prices shows they are climbing across the U.S. as crude oil prices rise and global tensions add pressure to energy markets. As of Thursday, the national average for regular gasoline was $3.25 per gallon, according to AAA.
Daniel Armbruster, spokesperson for AAA Texas, said Iran holds a significant position in the global crude oil market, and crude oil is the main component used to produce gasoline.
"Drivers are beginning to see gas prices move higher, and there are a few factors behind the increase," said Armbruster.
"Crude oil prices are rising amid geopolitical tensions overseas, and that’s putting upward pressure on gas prices. At the same time, we’re entering the time of year when refineries switch to summer-blend gasoline and demand begins to increase as more people take spring road trips."
According to AAA, the statewide gas price average in Texas is $2.87 per gallon for regular unleaded fuel.
Here is a look at what gas prices look like in Central Texas.
What are gas prices in Austin?
According to AAA, gas prices have risen throughout Austin.
Here is a look at prices in Austin and San Marcos:
- Current prices: $2.91
- Last week's prices: $2.73
- Average price last year: $2.77
What are some tips to save money of fuel?
According to AAA, you can still save at the pump by practicing these habits when driving:
- Drive smoothly and avoid aggressive driving. Rapid acceleration and hard braking can significantly reduce fuel economy.
- Slow down and follow the speed limit. Fuel efficiency typically drops quickly at speeds above 50 mph.
- Keep your tires properly inflated. Underinflated tires create more resistance and reduce fuel efficiency.
- Remove unnecessary weight from your vehicle. Extra cargo makes your engine work harder and lowers fuel economy.
- Use the AAA mobile app to find cheaper gas. The app helps drivers locate the lowest gas prices nearby, which can help save money at the pump.
