A hailstorm swept across Central Texas Tuesday evening, damaging a nursery in Leakey, a small town near Rio Frio and Lost Maples State Natural Area. Reports indicated the hailstones measured about 3 to 4 inches in diameter.
The hailstorm tracked from Del Rio to Comfort on Tuesday night. The National Weather Service issued severe thunderstorm warnings across the region and a tornado warning for Uvalde and Real counties, where Leakey is located. Officials urged residents to seek shelter around 6:41 p.m., particularly in the Garner State Park area.
The hail was massive. Texans on social media posted photos of baseball-sized hailstones. Supercell thunderstorms frequently cause severe hailstorms that produce large, damaging hail due to their powerful, rotating updrafts.
As expected, the storm disrupted the evening for many Central Texans. Garner State Park staff canceled their spring break activities for the evening as a precaution.
"Just experienced the storm of a lifetime from the summit of Old Baldy! Rio Frio and Leakey took a beating from massive hail, some stones as big as softballs, stretching 6 miles long. Miraculously, no one was hurt. The sun will shine again," park staff wrote in a Facebook post.
Here's what Texans shared from the aftermath of the storm:
