A new kind of vehicle is beginning to appear on Austin streets, and it looks unlike anything else on the road.

Zoox, the Amazon-owned autonomous vehicle company, has started testing its purpose-built robotaxi in downtown Austin. The fully driverless vehicle is designed without a traditional front or back, with a symmetrical, bidirectional layout and no steering wheel or pedals.

Zoox plans to expand testing in Austin in the coming months before offering limited rides later this year. The company joins Waymo and Tesla in bringing autonomous vehicle technology to the city, which has quickly become a testing ground for robotaxi services.
