Walmart shoppers in Austin will soon see changes inside local stores as the retail giant rolls out a sweeping renovation plan across Texas. The changes are intended to speed up trips and modernize the in-store experience.
The Bentonville, Arkansas-based company plans to remodel 72 stores statewide in 2026, including multiple stores in the Austin area, as part of a $2.5 billion investment in Texas over the past five years.
The renovations are expected to touch multiple parts of the store, including operations such as pharmacy, apparel and delivery. The company said it hopes the upgrades will make shopping feel "easy, intuitive, and connected."
Vision centers and pharmacies will be updated with private consultation rooms for patients. Interactive displays will modernize the brand and help customers visualize products at home. Updates to the Walmart app will allow users to navigate aisles or book special services ahead of time.
Expanded pickup and delivery options will also be available, and the brand is upgrading its parking, landscaping and signage.
Neighborhood Markets, the company's smaller-format grocery model, will receive expanded deli and hot bar selections, improved lighting and fixtures, pharmacy delivery options, and upgraded areas for fulfilling online grocery orders.
The Texas upgrades are part of a nationwide effort to execute more than 650 remodels in 2026 as the company looks to widen aisles and enhance checkout experiences at more of its stores.
Additional Central Texas projects are also coming down the pipeline for Walmart. In Manor, just east of Austin, the company has filed plans with the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation for a roughly $2.6 million renovation that includes expansion and updates to a fuel station, with construction expected to begin in 2027, according to the filing.
A new supercenter is also slated to open this year in Celina, north of Dallas.
Walmart operates approximately 10,900 stores across 19 countries and employs more than two million associates worldwide.
