An Austin woman, Brittney Bailey, has been sentenced to 40 years in prison after a Travis County jury found her guilty of seriously injuring one of her infant twins and injuring the other. Bailey, 33, was convicted on May 8 on one count of injury to a child causing serious bodily injury and one count of injury to a child causing bodily injury. A conviction for injury to a child causing serious bodily injury is a first-degree felony, punishable by up to life in prison.

Bailey was first arrested on May 8, 2024, after authorities said she injured her 3-month-old twins. They were hospitalized because of the injuries, but details about the specific injuries were not shared publicly. Prosecutors argued during the trial that the injuries were intentionally inflicted. Evidence was presented starting Monday, May 4 and jurors returned their verdict May 8.

Jurors sentenced Bailey to 40 years in prison on the more serious charge and 10 years in prison on the second charge. The sentences will run concurrently, meaning she will spend 40 years behind bars. "Our office is grateful to our dedicated staff, law enforcement partners, first responders, and the medical team at Dell Children’s Medical Center for their unwavering dedication to hold the defendant accountable and seek justice for the victims," said Travis County District Attorney José Garza in a news release. "We hope this conviction brings some measure of peace to those impacted by this tragedy."
