Austin police search for woman in $70K wallet theft fraud cases

Police say two February theft and fraud cases tied to stolen wallets cost Austin-area victims more than $70,000 combined.

Austin police are searching for a woman suspected in multiple wallet theft and fraud cases that cost victims more than $70,000 combined in February. The woman is believed to be connected to a case on Feb. 23 and another on Feb. 25 at a Randalls store. The suspect and another person made fraudulent withdrawals and purchases totaling over $50,000 at Chase Bank, Wells Fargo, and Best Buy. The same woman is also suspected of impersonating another victim at banks using stolen cards, bank information, and a fake ID. The suspect is described as a white woman in her early 60s to early 70s, about 160 pounds, with medium-length gray hair and glasses. A person of interest, a white man in his 30s or 40s with a heavy build, and a white Mazda SUV are also sought. Police urged shoppers to keep purses zipped and in front of them, avoid leaving bags in shopping carts, and keep personal items in sight.
