Pflugerville Independent School District will close four elementary schools in fall 2027 due to an projected $18 million shortfall in the next school year. Trustees voted to close Pflugerville, Dessau, Parmer Lane and Windermere elementary schools. The closures are expected to save $9.8 million in the 2027-28 school year. The district is already grappling with a $10.9 million deficit this fiscal year. Pflugerville ISD is the latest Texas school district to close schools in an effort to reduce a mounting budget deficit as enrollment declines.

Trustee Renae Mitchell said voting for school closures was "the hardest thing that we’ve had to do."

"It’s a sad day," Mitchell said. "I had to draw on every strength of my faith."

As school districts across Texas face ballooning deficits, other school boards have also turned to school closures, which are almost always emotional and painful for the families and staff losing their school.
