One person was killed and two others were injured Saturday night in a shooting at a recreation area near Fort Hood, according to the U.S. Army.
Military police officers responded around 9 p.m. Saturday to reports of disorderly conduct at the Belton Lake Outdoor Recreation Area, located on the Fort Hood installation near Killeen. The report initially consisted of vehicles bypassing the gate and alcohol and drug possession.
When officers arrived, they attempted to break up a fight at the site and multiple shots were fired, Army officials said. The responding officers returned fire during the exchange.
Several people were treated by emergency medical staff at the scene while one civilian was airlifted to a local hospital. A civilian later died while another civilian remained hospitalized in stable condition. A service member was treated at the scene for minor injuries.
The victim who died was later identified as Harker Heights High School senior Mia Griffin, who was preparing to graduate with the class of 2026, according to a statement Killeen ISD provided to 6 News.
Two suspects were detained, according to Fort Hood. Their identities have not been publicly released.
The U.S. Army Criminal Investigation Division has taken over the investigation. Officials said there is no ongoing threat to the public.
