After questions swirled among Austin residents about whether two community pools were closed, city officials confirmed that Garrison Pool is currently open to the public, while Ramsey Pool is temporarily closed for repainting.
Dan Marco, senior public information specialist at Austin Parks and Recreation, told the American-Statesman that the city's aquatics staff prepared the pool for painting this week. Weather conditions, however, have not been favorable for the process.
"The repainting requires a seven-day cure period. We expect Ramsey Pool to reopen in mid- to late June, depending on the weather," Marco said. "June weather forecasts are dynamic this year, which makes it difficult to provide an exact opening date."
Despite some speculation on Nextdoor, a neighborhood-based social media platform, that Garrison Pool might be closed, Marco confirmed it is open for swimming. He said each city pool is closed once a week for cleaning and minor maintenance. Garrison was closed earlier last week, he noted, for that purpose.
Marco directed Austinites the city's online list for the most up-to-date, accurate pool and splash pad listings and statuses. He said Google listings of the department-maintained pools are sometimes inaccurate, adding that those listings appeared to be why some residents thought Garrison was closed online.
He also directed residents to the department's live closure list, which tracks all the agency's parks, facilities, pool and trail closures.
